Producer Description
Named after the creator of the first absinthe recipe in 1793, Dr. Pierre Ordinaire, this legendary drink recalls one of the most original and successful recipes from the Belle Epoque days in Paris. Made from natural, traditional absinthe botanicals that provide an extraordinary taste experience, Absinthe Ordinaire has a lower alcohol by volume level (46% abv and 92 proof), more flavor and serves better with many cocktails.
Absinthe Ordinaire incorporates many botanicals such as wormwood, lemon balm, mugwort, peppermint and anise seeds distilled in a goose neck copper pot still.
Our absinthes are produced in the South of France, following some of the oldest absinthe recipes and using the highest quality artisanal distillation method. Ingredients are the same as a century and a half ago, including the infamous botanical wormwood.
A bit of history:
The first Absinthe recipe was invented by Dr. Pierre Ordinaire in 1792 in rural France. There were so many enthusiasts about this exciting new drink that it quickly travelled to Paris, becoming the symbol of the free bohemian spirit. Today, Absinthe Ordinaire Reserve recalls one of the most legendary Absinthe recipes during the glittering era of La Belle Epoque.
About Absinthe:
Absinthe, nicknamed “green fairy” and banned in 1915, was authorized again in 1988. It is only in 2011 that its level of thyuone (molecule present in the plant which, in strong dose, was supposed to make mad) is fixed at a maximum of 35 mg/kg.
Very appreciated for its taste of absinthe and its green reflections, this alcohol seduced many artists of which Van Gogh, Baudelaire, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Oscar Wilde… The famous tasting ritual is still practiced according to the tradition, by pouring water on the absinthe, through a perforated spoon supporting a sugar. Absinthe is made by macerating plants (grand wormwood, petite wormwood, green anise, fennel, hyssop) in a mixture of alcohol and water, followed by distillation. It contains between 55 % and 75 % of alcohol.
